murder. >> a 2% grade all the way out and all the way back. >> the new bay bridge bike path will offer a brand-new ride with amazing views but it will be a while before it's complete. >> and today could be san diego mayor bob filner's last day in office although he still denies harassing his accusers. from across the bay to around the world, the stories that matter on "kpix 5 news this morning. >> that ball hit him! wow. >> your realtime captioner: linda marie macdonald. good morning, everyone. it's friday, august 23rd. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 5:00. it's friday. and we need that weekend forecast don't we, lawrence? >> yes, we do. and today going to be a nice day. probably the nicest day of the entire week. still, we are starting out with plenty of low clouds that have surged onshore even some drizzle toward the coastline but the clouds going to break away and we'll see a little sunshine coming our way today and some warmer weather. out the door you go. cloudy skies early on, a little breezy in through the delta. 50s and some 60s now but this afternoon, what a friday it's

going to be. temperatures up in the 80s, maybe some low 90s inland. a lot of 60s and 70s, beautiful around the bay this afternoon. and some 60s patchy fog continuing toward the coastline. more on that weekend forecast in a moment. right now let's check the roads with elizabeth. thank you, lawrence. let's go outside right now to oakland. unfortunately, some people are stuck in a backup, not "friday light" here. look at that. the delays continue to grow. this is northbound 880. there was some overnight construction between 23rd and fifth. now we are getting word there is an accident there right there approaching the fifth avenue off-ramp. so lanes are blocked. that's what's causing the backups just north of the oakland coliseum. out towards the bay bridge toll plaza, here's a live look. the delays have improved somewhat we saw a few cars waiting in some of the cash lanes earlier. not the case anymore, moving fine all across the upper deck and they actually picked up some overnight roadwork. they had some of the left lanes blocked approaching the pay gates a little earlier. they reopened those a little bit ahead of schedule.

southbound 101 in marin county we had an earlier accident car ran into a power pole and tree. it's clear now so the southbound 101 ride through marin county is smooth until you hit the golden gate bridge. back to you guys. >> thank you. a new development from the growing wildfire near yosemite. for the first time, there are mandatory evacuations. the rim fire is only 1% contained. people in 1300 more homes and campsites just outside the park are now being evacuated. since the fire started on saturday, 63,000 acres have burned. kpix 5's cate caugiran has the latest on the fire danger. >> reporter: michelle, this fire is growing fast, actually faster than firefighters can put it out. and it's tripled in size. the rim fire is turning this area into an inferno. take a look. trees are exploding as flames, some 600 feet high, jump from treetop to treetop. and firefighters say steep hills and rugged terrain have been a major obstacle for them. so fire crews are taking this

-- or turning this into an air war. several planes have been dropping flame retardant as ground crews try to divert fire away from homes. the major concern this morning is the wildfire's push towards the small community of pine mountain lake. for the first time an evacuation is in order for the hundreds of homes there and dozers are working hard at clearing containment lines should this fire spread to this side. >> we have a monster on our hands. this fire is making its own weather. it's going every which direction. this is one of the worst i've ever been on and i have been doing it quite a few years. >> reporter: right now, firefighters are doing all they can to keep up. in the past couple of days, more than 4,000 lightning strikes have sparked 45 new fires here in northern california. so far, one firefighter has been injured. and yosemite national park still remains open. live in the studio, cate caugiran, kpix 5. the fire is threatening several summer camps in the area including camp tawonga a

jewish summer camp for kids and teens, also threatening san jose camp a family summer camp just east of groveland and spinning wheel an area that's filled with vacation rentals, homes and cabins. bay area campers that were up there on a school trip had their vacations cut short. >> turning out of camp, you could see the fire just burning on the hill. >> i was freaking out. i have never been in a situation like that before. >> the buses that took these kids up there had already left so students were jammed into vehicles anything available including a cattle truck and moving truck to evacuate them. developing news on the growing crisis in syria. the u.n. says one million children from syria are now living as refugees. at the same time, fierce battles continue in the suburbs of damascus. the syrian government blames rebel forces for the chemical weapons apparently used this week. but the u.n. secretary-general is calling on that government to allow inspections.

>> any use of chemical weapons anywhere by anybody under any circumstances would violate international law. >> the president has a range of options to consider, options that we've done or haven't done in the past. >> president obama says the possible chemical weapons attack is a big event of grave concern. air strikes between israel and lebanon continued today. israel's air force bombed targets south of beirut. that was in response to four rockets that militants sent into northern israel yesterday. an al qaeda-linked group claims responsibility for that. a woman walking near santa clara university says a man attacked her. this morning police need your help to find him. she was walking on franklin street near sherman just after midnight wednesday morning. police say a man knocked her down and sexually assaulted her. the woman fought back and the man ran away. this is what he looked like. a white male 6 feet to 6'2",

athletic build, clean-shaven, dirty blonde hair last seen wiring a white t-shirt and bluejeans. a bank robber with a signature hat has apparently struck again. marin police say the suspect robbed a wells fargo at the corte madera towne centre on wednesday. check out this brown knit happen with ear flaps. he has worn similar hats in a series of other robberies. the hatted bandit has hit five banks since january. city college of san francisco is getting some help in keeping its doors open. the city attorney dennis herrera asked a judge yesterday to block the accrediting commission from taking action. the school's accreditation is scheduled to end next summer. herrera accuses the commission of playing politics. >> a political debate over the future of california's community colleges that was going on in sacramento, the accreditation process was being used unfairly to squelch that debate.

>> since unaccredited schools are not eligible for state and federal funding, the revocation would force the college of 58,000 students to close. -- 85,000 students to close. this weekend we'll start seeing preparations for the new bay bridge. this is a live look at the san francisco-oakland bay bridge toll plaza. those right three toll lanes will be closed tonight and throughout the weekend. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec with more on those lane closures and what part of the bridge won't be ready come opening day. anne. >> reporter: we are counting down to that opening day. the bridge is going to be closed one week from today. and take a look at the new span here behind me. it's gorgeous. they have the deck lit up this morning. but reminder, as michelle just said, we have some lane closures going into effect starting tonight at 9:00. three westbound lanes on the right side of the toll plaza will be shut down to make way for the addition of a new fastrak-only lane. this is a live look at the toll plaza.

detours will be in place for drivers coming from 880 or west grand avenue. those lanes will reopen on monday at 5 a.m. just in time for the entire bay bridge to be shut down 2.5 days later to make way for the opening of the new span on tuesday september 3 at 5 a.m. now, that is the day the new bike path will open too but not the whole thing. when it opens it will go from oakland to just short of yerba buena island at least for now. >> but after traffic has been moved on to the new east span, they will start to demolish the original east span near the tunnel and that will free up the room to connect the bike path into the island. >> this is the path cyclists will be able to take once the bike path is ready. emeryville to yerba buena island and caltrans isn't giving a date as to when that will happen. for now, cyclists will just have to turn back around on the bridge and just head back to oakland. now, back to those lane closures, going into effect tonight, that actually doesn't have anything to do with the

new span of the bay bridge. that is part of a project to have automatic toll taking systems on all 8 bay area bridges. and this is the final one to go through that completion. so a lot of changes going on, on the bay bridge. live on treasure island, anne makovec, kpix 5. >> we're just five days away from wednesday's bridge closure and 11 days until the new one opens. until that new span opens, we'll have a commute survival guide at kpix.com/bridge. there's still no deal between bart's union leaders and its management. we are getting word the two sides met yesterday. "the examiner" reports some business leaders are urging the governor now to personally get involved. bart ridership is on the rise though. the transit authority says it has an increase in a three- month period from april through the month of june. more than 390,000 people are now taking the trains weekly.

that's a 6.4% increase. sfo line saw a jump of 5% and at the same time bart's on-time service fell by 2%. it was a dump run that didn't end up at a real dump. piles of debris from a burned- out business in oakland were found littered across a field miles up the road on mare island in vallejo. this pile had enough construction debris to fill two dump trucks. solano county sheriff's deputies went through the mess and found it came from the allied fellowship service a former drug rehab center that's now owned by the bank. deputies found the subcontractor who hauled the trash and he has now removed it from mare island. he is expected to be charged. time now 5:10. stepping down, san diego prepares for their disgraced mayor's resignation. >> out of hiding the surprising spot where george zimmerman was seen shopping. >> coffee chaos. the simple mistake that sent fists flying inside this restaurant. le. >> it looks like this could be the nicest day of the week. changes for the weekend. we'll talk about that coming up. >> and they just may have

well, it went from coffee to fisticuffs at a florida dunkin' donuts shop. a man got the wrong order at the drive-through and police say that just set him off. so he went inside the store to yell at the employee. and you can see, punches were thrown. the customer pulls out a loaded handgun! hits the employee over the head. the man was arrested. the employee by the way is doing fine. >> all over coffee, huh? >> yeah, apparently wanted it right. >> i guess so. well, let's get a check on the roads now with elizabeth. how's it looking? >> needs his coffee. we know how that feels. all right. let's go out towards 880. we have been closely watching it since 4:30 this morning. we had an accident in a cone zone. so that kind of double play was not doing good things for the morning drive. anyway, things are improving now so they just cleared that accident just left the chp reports and by 5:00 they were hoping to reopen lanes with the overnight construction. so northbound 880 at fifth is still a little sluggish as you head towards downtown but definitely not the bottleneck we were closely watching at around 4:30 this morning.

all right. westbound 580 looking pretty good right now. pretty typical stuff here. 16 minutes coming out of the altamont pass starting to see a few tapping of the brake lights as you come past the wind turbines but the livermore valley looks pretty good. bart has 35 trains or so all running on time including all those stops heading towards downtown san francisco. in fact, all mass transit looks good at 5:15 this morning. bart systemwide on time. bart, muni, caltrain and ace all on time. let's show you outside. it's getting crowded at the dublin interchange. brake lights towards the altamont pass. once you reach pleasanton, though, pretty typical stuff looking really good actually no big delays all the way out towards the castro valley y. that's the latest from the traffic center. for more on the weekend forecast, here's lawrence. >> elizabeth, we have clouds out there right now. they have surged well onshore but it looks like it will be a brighter day today and some warmer temperatures too. out the door we go and clouds have really made their way well

inland this morning. a pretty strong sea breeze in through the delta gusting over 30 miles per hour into fairfield this morning. but by the afternoon, i think we're looking at more sunshine today and it will be a warmer day. still we're starting out with some coastal drizzle and then more clouds surge onshore over the weekend probably going to see more drizzle coastside and it looks like the temperatures will start to cool down. but for today, enjoy it. likely the warmest day of the week. this trough going to start to dig in as we head in toward the weekend and that means some cooler temperatures are on the way. around the state still a lot of smoke in the high country due to the fire up there in yosemite. 92 degrees there. 98 in fresno. 92 in sacramento. partly cloudy 67 degrees into monterey bay. computer models showing you the clouds trying to break up through the day today and then surging back onshore as we head in toward the evening hours and then a really good run of low clouds and fog later on tonight and in toward tomorrow morning. temperature-wise, 78 degrees expected in san jose. should be nice and sunny there. about 63 degrees in pacifica. 72 in hayward. a little breezy toward the afternoon. east bay numbers could soar into the low 90s in places like

antioch into brentwood. about 89 in pittsburg, 82 in benicia, and about 87 degrees in livermore. as you get inside the bay, the clouds going to slowly break up. once it does lots of sunshine. about 71 in oakland. 66 a little breezy into san francisco. and still about 80 degrees sunny and warm in santa rosa. as we look toward the weekend, well, let's not even think about the weekend. we have today to get through. we have a lot of sunshine coming our way and then looks like it is going to cool down a bit. a few more clouds over the weekend and then temperatures stay below average well into next week. still nice, though. >> yeah. today is the day, though. >> today's the day to enjoy. >> all right, lawrence, thanks. happening today, san diego mayor bob filner may resign following a deal reached in a sexual harassment lawsuit. he was spotted leaving city hall with bags in hand and wednesday night he drove off with boxes. a potential part of the deal could allow filner to resign without having to pay back legal fees the city would have to spend. >> i'm hopeful that the

settlement agreement between bob and the city of san diego will include resignation. >> his parting gift should be, good riddance, instead of a handout. >> the city attorney says details won't be revealed until the city council considers the potential agreement tomorrow in a closed-door meeting. george zimmerman was out shopping for a shotgun. this picture was taken yesterday at a gun manufacturing company in florida. tmz reports zimmerman was asking about the legality of buying a pf-9 gun. apparently that's the same firearm he used to kill trayvon martin. he shot the 17-year-old in a florida neighborhood last year. it was self-defense and he was acquitted of murder. today a military jury will return to jury deliberations in a fort hood shooting case. major nadal hasan is on trial for killing 13 people at the military base. the army psychiatrist declined to address the jury before it

started deliberating yesterday. prosecutors are calling for a verdict that would allow the death penalty. president obama has personally called a georgia elementary school bookkeeper to thank her for saving children's lives. he says, antoinette tuff was a hero for keeping a gunman from going on a shooting massacre. mr. obama praised tuff for the courage she displayed in talking to 20-year-old michael hill which led him to surrender to police. 5:19 now. vice president biden will be back on the job today. mr. biden will join president obama for the last stop of the president's bus tour. he spent the past couple of days at a houston hospital with his son. beau biden was in houston for medical tests at a hospital that specializes in cancer and brain disorders. the vice president said his son was returning to delaware after undergoing a successful procedure. it is 5:19 right now. coming up, a cosmic collision. the amazing video nasa captured on camera from outer space. >> and i'm dennis o'donnell.

grow. >> a man linked to the murder of an oakland investigator says about their history together. >> today the nicest day of the week. we'll have the weekend forecast coming up. >> we are getting word of a new accident in the maze involving a motorcycle. lanes are blocked. we'll have the latest details coming up. we have the latest developments on the fire situation here in the west. federal fire managers are asking the pentagon and canada to help fight the fires now. the rim fire is only 1% contained. 50 major fires are burning in about a dozen states out west. governor brown has declared a stat of emergency because of the rim fire as it continues to grow near yosemite national park. our cate caugiran joins us now with a look inside the firefighting efforts. >> reporter: you have probably seen the images of flame retardant drops from swooping planes. here you can see this is some of the most dramatic flames we're seeing out of the rim

fire. some of these flames are shooting about 600 feet high. you're basically looking at an inferno right here. but a pilot gives us another unique view on how dangerous these air drops can be. this is video shot with a go pro camera mounted to a cockpit window. this is probably the closest look we'll get to the flames. now, this fire has turned into an air war because these flames are no match for ground crews. the pilot who shot this is california air national guard lieutenant colonel brian allen. his real job is flying to hawaii for american airlines. he talked about the excitement of flying into the heart of a wildfire. >> this is really the closest flying you're going to get to combat in the united states. it's certainly thrilling. it's a uniquely risky mission. we only take very select pilots and flight crewmembers to do the mission. >> reporter: right now, there are more than 1300 firefighters on the line including some from the bay area. biggest challenge for the firefighters are those steep hills and rugged terrain that

you're looking at on your screen not to mention they are working against mother nature. high winds in the area have not been too kind to fire crews in the pathes past couple of days. more than 4,000 lightning strikes have sparked 45 new fires in northern california. now, we'll be live with reporter nick janes who is on the scene in just a few moments but first, let's get a check of weather and see if these firefighters will get any relief. lawrence. >> reporter: i think they will. we have a trough of low pressure now along the west coast and i think we are going to see some cooler air maybe a little more moisture in the atmosphere the next couple of days. we are seeing fog outside right now. and that has surged well onshore but going to clear out. today likely going to be the nicest day of the week in the bay area. still, a cloudy start to the day even some drizzle out toward the immediate coastline. temperatures have been fairly mild all week long in the 50s and 60s again. so not too bad if you are just headed out the door. by the afternoon, up in the 80s, maybe some low 90s well inland. you'll see some 70s and 60s and sunshine around the bay this afternoon. along the coastline low clouds and fog patchy fog and 60s.

more on the weekend weather in a moment. right now let's check the roads with elizabeth. thank you, lawrence. this is in the may see on the approach to the bay bridge toll plaza in the maze. it's in the maze itself. there is a motorcycle and one other car involved an overturn at westbound 80 at the maze. we are seeing delays build on westbound 80. a few brake lights as well on 24. so we'll continue to watch it. no wait by the way if you are heading towards the bay bridge at the toll plaza itself. otherwise, things look a lot better, including up and down northbound northbound 880 approaching fifth avenue. we had an accident and some overnight roadwork in that area. now there's no delay because they cleared both of those. now there's no delay all the way up to san leandro heading towards 980 interchange. westbound 580 pretty typical stuff once again the excite is about 16 minutes on the westbound lanes of 580 between the wind turbines and 680 and the dublin interchange. that is the latest from here in the traffic center. back to you. new details in the death of

a bay area woman are revealed in a jailhouse interview. the person of interest in the murder of sandra coke tells us they had a secret relationship. kpix 5's juliette goodrich sat down with randy alana, who claims there's something the family didn't know. >> reporter: behind bars, 56- year-old randy alana told me, i loved sandra more than life itself. when i asked him how she was killed, he told me, i would never lay a hand on her. alana is behind bars on a parole violation. but he is a person of interest in her murder. he says he and sandra talked about getting married numerous times. he says, she wanted to move to montgomery, alabama. she told me, if i changed my environment, i would change my bad habits. alana told me she went against her family and her job to be with me. it was always her biggest fear her family and our daughter would find out about my criminal past and have her committed. he said, she was always making up stories to her family about me. she told them, i own a cleaning business.

another time she told them i lived in arizona. i was in arizona but in jail." alana has been in and out of prisons. criminal history include manslaughter, kidnapping with intent to commit a sexual offense, rape and numerous parole violations. alana said sandra had a heart of gold. when he was released from jail august 1 of this month, he said sandra picked him up and took him home. they celebrated her 50th birthday the following day. he told me she recently said, this time, when you get out of jail, we will get married so you can be on my health plan." but three days after his release, sandra went missing. her body found august 9th near a park in vacaville. juliette goodrich, kpix 5. >> we asked sandra's sister about what alana told juliette yesterday. she said the d.a. asked her not to make any comment. 5:35 now. a santa cruz surf instructor

faces more charges involving underaged girls. 38-year-old dillon griner is already in jail charged with possession of child pornography and lewd acts with a child. now officials say they found more victims. they say his computer had more than half a million images and videos. a 16-year-old boy is crying foul after he caught a home run ball at at&t park and someone snatched it right out of his hands. it happened during the giants- red sox game on wednesday. you have to watch carefully here. the ball lands on levi's landing. police say the man tackled the boy pulled his arm back and then took the ball. he then walked off and that's him right there in the black shirt. the boy was actually treated for pain in his wrist. smartphone thieves caught redhanded. a bay area club owner cracked down on thefts. in the middle of the loud music and dancing crowds, thieves were picking out their targets. steven lee the club owner of the grand decided to set up a sting after 15 to 20 phones

the latest retailer to report disappointing earnings, the new york-based company posted a loss in its latest quarter of almost $34 million. it increased the number of stores it plans to close. other teen retailers with recent slumping sales, abercrombie & fitch and american eagle outfitters. j.c. penney has adopted a plan to protect against takeovers for a year as it works to recover from its worst annual sales in more than two decades. the plan would take effect if a person more group acquires 10% or more of the company's shares. american airlines and u.s. airways want to settle the government's lawsuit against their proposed merger. the two carriers filed a motion thursday to set a november trial date. the proposed merger was moving towards final approval this month when the u.s. justice department and six states threw up a roadblock saying the deal would reduce competition and lead to higher fares. looking to ditch your old iphone as soon as apple comes

yosemite forces more people of their homes and campsite reporter nick janes...is ne the fire lines... in the e-land... nick a wildfire burning near yosemite forcing more people out of their homes and campsites. reporter nick janes is near the firelines in the town of groveland. good morning, nick. >> reporter: good morning, frank and michelle. as you said we have some

evacuations in effect. it's about 300 homes have been evacuated as of yesterday. evacuation advisory in effect for about 2500 more homes as this fire is pretty much growing in all directions. it's pushing toward yosemite which is east. and then it's also pushing west toward the community of pine mountain lake. that's about 3,000 homes there that are threatened. and so this morning, firefighters are expecting to really have their hands full as they have for the past couple of days as this fire over the past 24 hours has nearly quadrupled in size. it is now more than 62,000 acres. containment has been dropped from 5% to 2% and finally the latest update we have is just 1% containment on this rim fire that's burning in the stanislaus national forest. so conditions not expected to cooperate today as the forecast is for 90s and possible lightning as well so firefighters heading into this weekend with this fire that's burned about a week really expecting to have an uphill battle to get this under control in any aspect. it's really again burning in

all directions growing aggressively. >> and nick, talk about grow land. it's a beautiful -- groveland. it's a beautiful mountain town. and pine mountain lake there 3,000 homes. is that a ghost town now or are people actually kind of sticking and staying until this thing gets real close? >> reporter: yeah. you always see that, right, where people in these communities decide to stick it out. it's maybe a 50/50 split. some of the areas there's an evacuation advisory. people are certainly cognizant of what's happening. they are ready to go at a moment's notice but maybe haven't leavitt just yet. in the area where sheriff's deputies told people it is time to go, a lot of those people have left. we were on one street yesterday where there was just one man left and he said, i'm not league until my house is on fire. but then he looked around and said, well, all my neighbors have left. so a lot of people in the evacuation order zone are heeding the warnings and they are leaving as this fire, boy, it is really something. just a sense of perspective here, the plume of smoke is 40,000 feet high. i have had reports that people in san francisco have been able to see it some 100 miles away
